INFO: In the year 2029, the world is made borderless by the net; augmented humans live in virtual environments, watched over by law enforcement that is able to download themselves into super-powered, crime busting mecha. The ultimate secret agent of the future is not human, has no physical body and can freely travel the information highways of the world, hacking and manipulating whatever and whenever required. Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic police thriller dealing with the exploits of the cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, a member of a covert operations division of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission known as Section 9. The unit specializes in fighting technology-related crimes. Kusanagi and her colleagues face external threats and also suffer internal conflict over their own natures. 

The franchise first started off with Ghost in the Shell the movie, which is arguably one of the greatest anime films to be created, if not one of the major sci fi movies that has influenced many others (The Matrix, Steven Spielberg, etc). This then spanned a movie sequel, Ghost in the Shell 2.0: Innocence as well as two anime series and an anime sequel film.  The anime series, called Stand Alone Complex, is made up of two parts: the Stand Alone part (fillers, though they serve a purpose to fleshing out the world and the characters) and the Complex part (the main arc). The anime sequel film (Solid State Society) follows afterward the second season/anime sequel,2nd GIG. 

The franchise as a whole, to me, is a cornerstone when it comes to sci fi/cyberpunk genre; it delves not only into the existentialist themes that make up the core of sci fi today (robots with individuality and questioning the idea of self!) but also deals with the socioeconomics and politics of the futuristic world which in essence, creates some excellent commentary regarding the progress of society and technology today. Each installment really improves and expands the boundaries of what the franchise builds itself upon and as such, it’s really solid overall. Not to mention that the series also has a great soundtrack, excellent dubbing and smooth animation (plus great opening scenes); you’re bound to find something in here that appeals to you. I’d highly recommend it to anyone- especially sci fi fans who are looking for something equally as action packed as mature.
